wherein i read frederick douglass' first autobiography

CONTENT WARNING: THIS IS AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A FORMER SLAVE, CONTAINING, AMONGST OTHER DIFFICULT MATERIAL, GRAPHIC DESCRIPTIONS OF VIOLENCE AND DEPRAVITY. WHILE I BELIEVE WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO ENGAGE WITH THESE HISTORIES, THIS EPISODE MAY NOT BE FOR EVERYONE.

come, gather ‘round

For Black History Month this year, I read portions of Frederick Douglass’ first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, each week for paying subscribers. But, given the importance of being able to understand history and to grasp the wisdom it has to offer us, while also considering the significance of the particular document in question, I’ve decided to compile those recordings into one long episode as the first free episode of the unspooling podcast.

Going forward, each new episode of the unspooling podcast will be made available for free listeners after a nominal period of early access for paying subscribers. (Episodes are usually between 25 minutes and an hour in duration.) If you enjoy listening to great stories—and can endure my not-so-dulcet tones—then I hope you’ll join us as we explore the vast history of modern storytelling. (I’ll share more about the podcast in a dedicated post shortly.)

If you can afford to do so—please do consider a paid subscription. (Alternatively, you can use this link to “buy me a coffee” and select an amount of your choosing). unspooling relies on the generous support of readers and listeners to survive—not advertising or paid sponsorships. If you enjoy what it is I do here and believe in supporting independent artists in this harsh, capitalist hellscape, then I thank you. I quite literally can’t do this without you.

If you would like to subscribe to unspooling, but can’t afford the listed price, please send me a DM here on Substack or send an email to unspooling@substack.com and I will be happy to provide a discounted rate.

Be well, and stay on the Path, my friends
